Every tournament wants Tiger Woods to tee off at its course.
The Rocket Mortgage Classic knows that, and is taking its shot.
“He’s been invited. He knows we got a spot for him. He hasn’t made any decisions yet,” tournament director Jason
Langwell said.
WXYZ brought up Woods in a conversation with Langwell, who would love for the 15-time major champion to add Detroit to his schedule.
“We’re in active conversations with him,” he said. “We’re hopeful he comes. He’s been given all the information he needs to hopefully make a decision to come into town and we’ll anxiously await the decision.”
Langwell landed commitments from Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson, and Bubba Watson before the pandemic hit. The Rocket Mortgage Classic was scheduled for May 28-31 before the pandemic forced the PGA Tour to reshuffle its schedule.
“I think there’s players we haven’t announced that we’re hopeful of. Dustin Johnson hadn’t committed as of the time before (the coronavirus outbreak), but he’s expressed interest. He had an experience, as he put it, he putted horribly last time he was here — but he really enjoyed it.”
The tournament is now scheduled for July 2-5.
